Brock Purdy Is No Longer 'Mr. Irrelevant'

When the San Francisco 49ers started the season, the key issue surrounding the team was centered around the quarterback position. Everyone seemed convinced Jimmy Garoppolo was headed to a team like the Indianapolis Colts. Instead, Jimmy Garoppolo surprised many by taking a pay cut and staying with the 49ers. Garoppolo contract was 6.5 million dollars with incentives that pushed his potential compensation toward 16 million dollars.

Update: According to Bleacher Report Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers agreed on a $137.5 million 5-year contract.

With Jimmy Garoppolo backing Trey Lance, the pressure Lance faced went from ten to infinity and beyond. Unfortunately, Trey Lance would suffer a season-ending injury for the second straight year in a row. Jimmy Garappolo also sustained a significant injury not too long after. With Garoppolo and Lance out of the picture, the San Francisco 49ers had no choice but to turn to an unlikely source.

highest passer rating for a QB in his first five starts since Kurt Warner in 1999.

Enters Brock Purdy. There were 262 players chosen in the 2022 NFL Draft. Brock Purdy was selected #262. As most of us know, the last pick in the draft is given the unfortunate title known as "Mr. Irrelevant." There is no way that Brock Purdy should be associated with that title whatsoever. He has answered the call since he was lodged into the starting role.

It goes without saying that the 49er's offense is loaded regardless of who the starting quarterback is. The 49ers' acquisition of Christian McCaffrey took the team's offense to another level. Deebo Samuel and George Kittle are the WR/TE most teams would die to have. Led by Fred Warner and Nick Bosa, the 49er's defense is the best in the league.

It also helps to have Kyle Shanahan as your head coach and Brian Griese as your QB coach. There's no doubt that Purdy has a great team around him. The numbers show that he has certainly held his own. Brock Purdy had 13 touchdowns and 4 interceptions during the regular season. Brock Purdy's first five starts were the stuff of legend.

He was the first QB in nearly 75 years to win his first five starts with multiple touchdowns. He also had the highest passer rating for a QB in his first five starts since Kurt Warner in 1999.
Unlike Dak Prescott and Josh Allen's performances in the postseason, Brock Purdy has the stats that will make 49ers fans smile. Zero interceptions.

The man that shouldn't be known as "Mr. Irrelevant" is one victory away from a Super Bowl appearance. It will be the stuff of legend if the last overall pick of this year's NFL Draft ends up leading his team to a Super Bowl victory in his rookie season.
No matter what occurs this weekend, Brock Purdy is a player that is quite relevant now. I believe he has a shot to be the 49er's starting quarterback in the foreseeable future.
